Metallica fue el encargado de hacer ruido en el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: por su monstruoso y amenazante sonido que ha sacudido cabezas por décadas, fueron inducidos al Salón de la Fama la noche del sábado 4 de abril, en una ceremonia que se sintió más como un concierto de rock que como una entrega de premios.
Por primera vez, el evento fue abierto al público en general, permitiendo que los fans de la banda la acompañaran en ese importante momento de su carrera. Cerca de cinco mil personas llenaron las galerías del recinto en Cleveland, refrescando el ambiente impuesto en ceremonias anteriores donde sólo contaban con invitados VIP en mesas para cenar.
Gran parte del público fue a rendir homenaje a Metallica, que encabezó la lista de inducidos que incluía además a los pioneros del rap Run DMC, el guitarrista Jeff Beck, la voz del soul Bobby Womack y el grupo vocal de rhythm and blues Little Anthony and the Imperials.
El evento también sirvió como reunión con el bajista Jason Newsted, que dejó el grupo en el año 2001, juntándose con sus ex compañeros de banda en el escenario para tocar 'Master of Puppets' y 'Enter Sandman'.
Este año, el Jammin de todas estas estrellas fue el sueño de todo fan de la guitarra. No sólo Beck, Page y James Hetfield en el escenario, sino también Ronnie Wood de los Rolling Stones quien estará allí para inducir al salón al cantante de R & B y guitarrista Bobby Womack. Interpretaron junto a Joe Perry de Aerosmith, todos juntos esos monstruos el tema Train Keep a Rolling.
"Nadie sabe cuales son los elementos intangibles que hacen que una banda sea la mejor, pero, sean los que sean, Metallica los tiene", comentó el bajista de Red Hot Chili Peppers, Flea, quien pronunció un sentido discurso al presentar la banda.
En el momento de aceptar sus premios, los miembros de Metallica también contaron con la presencia del padre de Cliff Burton, bajista del grupo, que falleciera en 1986 en un accidente en Suecia.
Además, el vocalista James Hetfield sugirió una lista de grupos que no han sido inducidos al Salón de la Fama, como Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Rush, Kiss, Ted Nugent, Iron Maiden y Motörhead.
